Chris_Baker Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 An officer I am researching was appointed Town Major of a place between January and April 1919. He had just come out of a hospital, so it may be that the place bore no relation to the location of his unit, which was 268 Siege Battery RGA. Unfortunately the place name is not written clearly and is rather faded. Would not even make a decent scan. So any guesses? Could be in France, Belgium, Germany. The handwriting looks like Strenwood or Steinwoud. Definitely "Str" and "d" at the end. Looks like "nw" in the middle but less sure about that. Max Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Probably not, but Steenvoorde ?
bmac Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Only five places in in France start with 'Str' in my Michelin atlas and none fit. Another suggestion: Steenwerck between Bailleul and Armentieres just south of the A25. Has the 'St' and the 'nw' but no 'd' at the end. But then no-one's perfect! Andrew Hesketh Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Being bored I searched Multimap for places beginning with Str in France, Belgium and Germany. Only one place returned with a last letter of 'd' and that is unlikely (Strahlfeld - near Munich). Of course the name could be an anglicised version of a name which is actually spelled differently by the locals!?
