Guest dcheap Posted 6 July , 2005 Share Posted 6 July , 2005 Hi Looking for some very general information about this unit as part of family history research. All I know is that it is a 12-inch railway howitzer battery of 2 guns, designated as A and B. I have a relative who served with RGA/104a (from his medal card). Would love some history from during the war years (eg places deployed to). Any help greatly appreciated
Graham Stewart Posted 6 July , 2005 Share Posted 6 July , 2005 dcheap, All I have is the following regarding 104th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A.;- 104th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. was formed on 13th January 1916 in Plymouth, along with 103rd(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. Both were disbanded in 1919. In all there were nine Batteries formed that day the other seven being;- 99th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Forth Defences 100th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Tynemouth Defences 101st(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Sheerness 102nd(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Portsmouth 105th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Dover 106th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at Weymouth 107th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A. formed at ?. This particular Battery wasn't even British it was originally formed in Montreal in October 1915, as the 3rd(Overseas)Siege Bty, Siege Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force. It embarked at St.John, Nova Scotia and arrived in England in December 1915 and redesignated 107th(Siege)Bty,R.G.A.. It embarked Southampton for Le Harve in June 1916. On 8/1/1917 it was redesignated once again as 3rd(Canadian)Siege Bty,C.E.F. In November 1918 104th(Siege)Bty was serving unbrigaded as "Army Troops" with the 2nd Army, manning 2x 12inch Howitzers on railway mountings. Other than that I'm afraid nothing else know. If the "RGA/104a" that you cite is written just to the right of the British War Medal and Victory Medal on the Medal Index Card, that is not his unit, but rather the volume and page number for where he is listed in the medal rolls.
