PFF Posted 4 July , 2005 Share Posted 4 July , 2005 The English RAF so I've heard-would sing a song about having the crankshaft taken out of the Kidneys (after a Crash landing) The Germans Airmen had a postcard of a skull in a aviatior's cap with a German Mark in the teeth (higher pay for deadly service) What did the French do for "Airmen death humor"? Tim Godden Posted 4 July , 2005 Share Posted 4 July , 2005 The English song is sung in 'Aces High'. Cheers, Tim
Adrian Roberts Posted 5 July , 2005 Share Posted 5 July , 2005 RE: French black humour: I think it was Nungessor's emblem that was a skull with a chunk out of it. I'll check this and try and post a picture tomorrow Adrian
Adrian Roberts Posted 6 July , 2005 Share Posted 6 July , 2005 Attached, Nungessor's badge; a skull and cross-bones with coffin and candlesticks. No wonder Howard Hawks called his film "Hells Angels"; probably the later motorcycling Hells Angels got their name and badge from this! The skull with a chunk out of it was the badge of the 19th Squadron of the Imperial Russian Air Service, as used by aces Alexander Kazakoff and Ivan Smirnoff Adrian
