Chris_Baker Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 I have seen a reference to a Sergeant in the ASC being referred to as having rank (or is it appointment?) MSS. Can anyone confirm what it means?
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 The SS designation was Supply Specialist, could it be Master Supply Specialist or some variant? Ian
Joe Sweeney Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Chris, It's Mechanist Staff Serjeant. This was a category of Regimental Pay for ASC. It was an appointment for a man holding the rank of Staff Serjeant. Ian, What is your source for supply specialist? I have never seen that in any Pay Warrant, or Regulation for WWI. Did you see it in service records? Joe Sweeney
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Joe, Annex M page 239 of a book about the ASC that Jock Bruce copied for me! Better ask JB! Ian
Terry_Reeves Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 That particular reference refers to a regimental number prefix rather than a rank abbreviation. Terry Reeves
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Agree but on the service record of Pte Stephen Ford, whose number was prefixed SS, he was refered to as a Supply Specialist working at a variety of docks in France from 1915 - 1917. I don't know much about the ASC but thought after seeing this there was some correlation. Ian
Terry_Reeves Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Ian Not a criticism, merely an observation. As far as I'm aware the SS pre-fix applied to "old army " supply specials who had their own numbers prior to 1915. Amongst others, these included Bakers, Butchers and Clerks. Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Terry, No offence taken. I know very little about the ASC, except what I have read in WO 363/364 & 95, that's why I got JBs help! Ian
Joe Sweeney Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Ian, I see the reference in Annex M of the ASC History. I think this is a branch to which an ASC soldier was assigned. It is neither a rank nor an appointment by the KR or Royal Warrant. Its like saying he was assigned to Motor Transport or Horse Transport. He was assigned to Supply Specials. However, interesting use of the term "supply specialist" in the service records. Joe Sweeney
Chris_Baker Posted 13 July , 2003 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2003 Thanks everyone, Joe especially, for unravelling MSS for me.
