Andrew Hesketh Posted 2 July , 2005 Share Posted 2 July , 2005 I've been contacted by a chap who has discovered Sid's diary. Sid was killed at Gommecourt on 1st July 1916. The diary has turned up in Germany with German comments scribbled in it, thus suggesting he died in German hands or his body was 'cleared' by the Germans. He has no known grave. Obviously I will mount a full research but I have a couple of questions that Pals may be able to answer which will speed me up slightly. 1. Sid was from Sneinton - anybody know the name of the local paper that his obituary and photograph may, hopefully, appear in? 2. Sid obviously reached the German lines. I've noted many examples on both sides of a reluctance to take prisoners. Has anybody come across the prevailing mood at Gommecourt on 1/7/16? 3. Would anyone know the prevailing German attitude to captured, wounded enemies? Thanks.

Hi Andrew, Think it may be the Nottingham Evening Post?
