Bryn_Hammond Posted 10 July , 2003 Share Posted 10 July , 2003 In the latest WFA Bulletin there is a quarter-page ad for a company called something like 'D&G Publishing' in, I think, Sunny Donny (Doncaster to the uninitiated). They are selling hardbound reprints of unit histories (cavalry, Cheshires, etc) for about 25 pounds plus postage. Has anyone dealt with them? My reason for asking is that they don't give a 'phone number - making it difficult to contact them to get details of postage charges, whether the books contain photos, etc. Such minor omissions don't exactly encourage business ... Any info. welcome.
Geoff Parker Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 Bryn I asked the same question a few days ago but got no response. I've searched all the on-line directory enquiries but no listing. I assume that they must be listed under a parent publishers or something. If you find their number please let me know as Im after a couple of the books myself. I already have one of their books but purchased that at the RA museum Woolwich. Regards Geoff
Bryn_Hammond Posted 11 July , 2003 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2003 I asked the same question a few days ago but got no response. Geoff If you mean you asked the same question on this forum, I'm terribly sorry for not having paid more attention! It's my age... I'm at that difficult time in life... Neither of us are getting the answers we need though and much as I'd like to give them some of my hard-earned pittance, they're not exactly encouraging me. If I get any information, of course I'll let you know.
MartinWills Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 Geoff, A you have a copy of one of the reprints could you answer Bryn's query about quality/photos etc and let us know which volume you purchased - this sort of info/review would help us all to decide to what extent this avenue for reprints is worth pursuing. I accept that for some the plain text content is invaluable making any source essential but an idea of quality and completeness may well help others. Having said that I welcome any reasonable source of useful reprints. Martin
Simon_Fielding Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 I'd be interested in this too, as one of the books they offer is Bill's 15th Birmingham Battalion in the Great War..... Can't afford to lose £25!! Simon
Geoff Parker Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 Simon, Martin. I purchased the account of the RA in Action at Le Cateau, hence the reason the RA museum had a copy and until I saw the advert in Bulletin I assumed that it was something the museum had had reprinted for their own shop. Anyway about the quality, its not bad (although I was conned into paying £28 by the museum whereas the advert in Bulletin states £20). The book is hard bound in dark blue with gold lettering on spine (no dust jacket). The maps are all bound at the back of the book and are black and white (having not see the original book, I dont know if some or all of them were originally coloured). There are no photographs so I cant so what this publishers reproduction quality is like. I would not hestiate to puchase a book from them based on the standard of the one I already have, which is why I want to track down their telephone number and get some more information from them. I was after the Cheshires and the 18 pds handbook. Geoff
Tom Morgan Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 I don't have any details on D&G either but forum members might like to know of another source. There is a company (again, I don't know its name) which seems to be working through the job of reprinting just about all those out-of-print regimental, divisional and battalion histories. All their current output is listed in Ray Westlake's catalogue which has a separate "Regimental and Unit Histories" section. Tom
Bryn_Hammond Posted 11 July , 2003 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2003 Tom I think these are Naval & Military Press reprints. I've got nothing against them (although my Lincolnshire Regt had pages 74-78 missing) but I'm interested to know about what else is out there. By the way, a look in the WFA Bulletin reminded me it is 'D.P. & G. Military Publishers.'

I don't have any of these books - just saw them in the listings. Tom
John_Hartley Posted 11 July , 2003 Share Posted 11 July , 2003 It's Sod's Law isn't it. Months of trying to find a Cheshires History. Finally find one (via Abebooks) only 5 minutes from home. Feel very pleased that I persuade bookshop owner to knock £5 off his £95 price. Then you see a re-print advertised for £25. John
Geoff Parker Posted 15 July , 2003 Share Posted 15 July , 2003 Bryn If your copy of the Lincolns had pages missing, ring whoever you purchased it from. I had the same problem with mine copy and M and N did a reprint of the whole book adding the missing pages. They dont normally ask for the old copy back either so no postage to pay.
