Remembered Today:

Northern Irish recruit into the TF

Sapper 9386 Daniel McCallum was from Northern Ireland. He landed in France with 1st Highland Field Company RE in May 1915. How would an Ulsterman get into a TF unit? All thoughts welcome.

Could he have been living/working in Scotland?

A great many Ulstermen were living/working/recently settled in Scotland at this time. A quick check with Malcolm will confirm this.

In my research I have found a sizeable number who have family connections/work history in central Scotland with many in the general Broxburn area.

On a separate note, and for whatever reason, a lot of Ulstermen seem to have been connected with the Black Watch TF units and the exodus of these men to the colours in the early days of the war is noted in local histories.

Dunno if it helps ... there are three Daniel McCallums on the PRONI Ulster Covenant site.

Any more info on where in NI he was from?

Thanks, Roger and Des. Unfortunately I have no info on a specific location in Ulster but I do have his birthdate which was 18 November 1873 (so aged 39 on enlistment in 1914). Interesting to see that all three Daniel McCallums that signed the Covenant were from South Belfast.
