The last hero

THE area's last First World War veteran has died.

William Elder celebrated his 108th birthday on May 5 and was believed to be one of only 13 surviving First World War veterans in the country.

His daughter Kathleen Campbell, 79, of Linwood Close, Kettering, said: "He was a lovely man and a fantastic father."

Mr Elder was born in 1897, the same year the Kettering Evening Telegraph was first published.

He was born in Selkirk and served an apprenticeship as a gardener before joining up for the First World War.

He had two children, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

His funeral takes place today at Kettering Crematorium at 3pm.

Mr Elder's family have requested no flowers and are asking for any donation to be made to Country View Nursing Home, Warkton, where he died last week.

And after what seems to be a thoroughly fulfilled life, he deserves a good sleep.

Only resting.

RIP William

You have answered the final roll call & passed on to higher service, once more with your comrades from all those years ago.

Will be raising a glass in your memory tonight.

They seem to be leaving us rapidly now. We are sad to see them go, but they go to a well deserved rest. God bless, William.

We will remember Them
