Bob Coulson Posted 1 July , 2005 Share Posted 1 July , 2005 Roger, Quote from an officer, "At 3-00pm the bombardment opened, it looked very grand and we were cheered by the imposing sight but we found afterwards that the flat trajectory of the naval guns had done no damage to the Turkish trenches which were deep and well concealed. At 3-30pm we went over advancing on a compass bearing. The shrapnel fire was heavy and the enemy machine guns had a clear target, the ground was intersected with low hedges at all angles and the men conformed to these while the officer casualties were heavy." CSM Green and about 100 men got into the Turkish front line but being without orders or reinforcements came back on the morning of the 22nd. Bob.
