Somme - Here We Come !

The Leatherhead contingent will be leaving late tonight with the target of Thiepval at dawn tomorrow. Weather looks a bit dubious but we will be wellied up and therefore undaunted !

One vehicle has had to be laid up, so reserve transport is to be used. Hoping to see some Pals over there on Friday and Saturday.

Paul - I am being called worse by my long suffering wife. It is my 15th wedding anniversary today and I am off to the Somme again. My 1st anniversary coincided with the 75th anniversary and you can guess where I was ! She foolishly asked what is more important 1st July or our anniversary. My lack of a direct answer was answer enough !

Begs the question as to why you got married on the 1st July !!

I got married on the 1st July, 17 years ago, but my husband shares my passion for all things WW1. 4 days later, I placed my wedding flowers on the grave of an unknown, a bit battered but they had had quite a journey from St Peters, Reading, to the Somme!

(I think Ians anniversary was yesterday)

Yes, indeed , I married on the 30th June.

Just back from the Somme and had a fine time despite the indifferent weather.

The highlight was a lengthy trek around the Gommecourt area. Much respect for the efforts of the London Rifle Brigade et al , in the face of horrendous topography.

Nice to see you Ian, if only briefly.

You'll be happy to know the weather improved from 2nd July! Typical!

Yes Paul , good to see you on 1st July. The weather was manageable this year. No rain at Lochnagar and good clear breaks during both days. Let's hope the 2006 anniversary is a like the day itself. Looking forward to it already.
