David Seymour Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 Another Old Thetfordian has surfaced in my search through the Entrance Registers and CWGC. I would be grateful for any info anyone can add to what I already have. He seems quite old to have been a Sapper in the RE, and rather over qualified. As usual any help gratefully received. Best wishes, David WALKER, Edwin Alfred DOB: 6/1877 UNIT: 459th Field Coy Royal Engineers DATE OF DEATH: 22/3/1918 AGE AT DEATH: 40 RANK: Sapper 159481 MEMORIAL: FAVREUIL BRITISH CEMETERY Sp. Mem.4. Myrtle Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 David There is some confusion over Edwin Walker's place of birth. There is an entry for an Edwin Walker in Sep Quarter at Atcham, a village just south east of Shrewsbury, however the nearest match in 1901 census is an Edwin Walker 23 years old Born: Essex, Dover Court and Resident at time of census at Terrington St Clement. Occupation: Draughtsman Myrtle
David Seymour Posted 27 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 27 June , 2005 Myrtle, This is most helpful as I had no idea about the Shrewsbury connection, and couldn't be sure that he had enlisted in King's Lynn. Very many thanks. David
David Seymour Posted 27 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 27 June , 2005 Myrtle, Thanks for your second posting. It does seem likely that he was the Dovercourt man. I remain puzzled as to why he apparently threw up an architect's practice to join up as a Sapper at the age of 40. You might think the army would have had uses for his talents higher up the chain. Thanks for your interest on this one. Best wishes, David
Myrtle Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 David Confusion over. He was born in Shrewsbury but the family lived in Essex at time of 1881 census. Alfred Walker 33 Born: Kingham Oxford Farmer 300 acres employing 7 men Frances 35 years Wife Frances M. daughter 4 years Born: Shrewsbury Edwin A. 3 years Born: Shrewsbury Wallace J. 1 year Born: Dovercourt Essex Donald W 4 months Born: Dovercourt Essex All living at 3, Clarence Villa, Dovercourt Essex with four servants. Somebody lost count of where exactly the children were born when it came to the 1901 census. Myrtle
