john w. Posted 26 June , 2005 Share Posted 26 June , 2005 Saw this programme tonight with David Dimbleby who mentioned George Butterworth who was collecting folk tales and songs, being the heart of British Culture. Apart from the CWGC material anyone got any more on him? John

Dragon Posted 26 June , 2005 Share Posted 26 June , 2005 This link is from the Classical Composers Database. http://www.calculator.net/Butterworth/Butterworth.html There's another thread currently on Butterworth, somewhere on here and about 20 other threads from the past if you search. ianw Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 Yes, nicely done by the BBC. We very rapidly went from an early piece of film foot of Butterworth morris-dancing in a rather quaint fashion to Great War footage and picture of a memorial plaque or card to him with the unmistakeable shape of the Thiepval Memorial on it. It pointed up again the dreadful contrast between the Edwardian age and the age of industrial war.
Tim Godden Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 Hi Pals, Did anyone record this? Being here Sausage-side I tend to miss things like that. If anyone did manage to record it I would be willing to do a swap - the programme for a copy of a Butterworth CD I have. Cheers, Tim
