HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 24 June , 2005 Share Posted 24 June , 2005 There were two "Winners" of the French Croix de Guerre & Two "Winners" of the Belgian Croix de Guerre who served in the 20th Bn,The London Regiment: French: L/Cpl.C.B.Anderson;~20.1.1916 Pte.F.Hill;~5.11.1915. Belgian: RSM;H.Chesney:~2.2.1918 L.Cpl.J.Gomer;~2.2.1918 Also in the 47th London Dvn History there is listed: Roumania:[Crown Of Roumania] Major:H.S.Read;~10.3.1919 In common with most "Foreign" awards no citation details are available[Though the Majority are "Gazetted",however it is most unlikely that they had any particular act in conjunction with the French & Belgian Forces, rather that they were awared as part of the "Inter~alia" system of awarding Allies Medals & Decorations along with UK Awards, following Major actions, for lesser notable acts~ just occasionally one finds a press release or similar giving details,as with British Military Medals, but more often than not the Acts that led to their award remain anonymous, rest assured however that these men were deemed to have acted "Above & Beyond" to receive their awards,I have never subscribed to the "Up with The Rations" train of thought regarding these awards, the relatively miniscule number awarded{when regarded by Regiment~ Battalion}defines this. SteveE Posted 24 June , 2005 Share Posted 24 June , 2005 I know it's hijacking the thread somewhat (sorry Steve) but can anybody confirm whether Lt-Col. Daniel Patrick Driscoll of the 25th Royal Fusiliers was awarded the Croix-de-Guerre, his obituary suggests he was but I can find no other evidence of such.
