New NA Catalogue headings for POW Archive

Stebie9173

Recommended Posts

Recently the NA have "reindexed" the files stored under FO 383 expanding on the information included therein.

The FO 383 series includes correspondence on POWs during WW1, including Allied POWs in Germany and the Balkans, German POWs in the UK, interned foreigned nationals in both the UK and Germany. It even includes a few individuals letters to and from the prison camps, and lists of POWs held.

If you go to the NA Catalogue on the website, type in "FO 383" in the Search then click Browse from here when the results come up and click on the FO383 (not the description) you will get the new index.

There seems to be a variety of information stored, which would probably be helpful to us all!

For example FO 383/18

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov....&accessmethod=5

(Click on full details tab)

Clicking on "browse from here" will take you back to the full list FO383/1 to FO 383/547. Should keep us busy for a while...

Hope this can help someone,

Steve.

Steve

Thank you for this link.

It seems to point us to a lot of information which would be very helpful if we were to visit the NA.

Steve,

Took a look at this file and much of it is Foreign Office correspondence. There are a few lists most of which are in German (understandably). I have copied a list of about 40 names of POW's taken in 1915 who died whilst in German hands. (This list includes the cause of death and place of burial).

I will post the details here later as they may be of interest to some Pals.

Regards

PAUL JOHNSON

Glad you found it of use, Paul.

Did you just look at FO 383/18 or have you browsed through the other index headings for FO 383, too?

I'm going to have a proper search through the index myself sometime.

Steve.

At Last and as promised. Here are the names taken from a list in FO 383/18 as pointed out by Steve. I have shown the original details and added the additional stuff from CWGC and SDCD.

Hope You Find It Of Use.
