Remembered Today:

L/Cpl Gent, Unknown Canadian

I have this rather damaged photo of a Canadian in WW1 uniform. On the back is written "L/Cpl Gent" - no initials.

The name is not too common, and there are few enough "Attestation Forms" to soldiers called Gent to make it possible to figure out which one he is.

It would be a big help if some Canadian Pal could tell me where this photo was taken. I hope that this could eliminate some of the Gents whose forms are available online.

The card, which was produced in Canada, has no town on it. However, it does have "Clarke's Studio, 159 James N, Opposite Knox Church".

Anyone know which city or town this photo was taken in?

Steve

Thanks a lot for that source, not really one I would have found on my own.

This could just be a co-incidence, but I just had a quick look at the little group of Gent "Attestatation Forms". Believe it or not, one of the soldiers - Herbert Alfred Gent - was from the town mentioned in your information - Hamilton. In fact, now that I have looked in detail at his form I see that he actually lived in James Street!

Herbert Alfred Gent joined up in February 1916 in the 173rd Highlanders. If the pic is of him, I assume that he was later transferred to an "English" Regiment?

Thanks again Steve

Thanks Richard.

We have a "suspect" - see the rest of this thread for a link to his form.

I have just read the reverse. Blimey, accepted for the CEF at 16 years and 3 months!
