Remembered Today:

Royal Engineers Number, again!

Topic discussed a 1,000 times before no doubt but I can't seem to narrow it down on the search.

My question,

Would RE Corps number WR/264578 be the same as 264578 ?

i.e. Could two different men have these two numbers? Or was the WR/ number a standard RE number with a WR/- prefix?

Also, does anyone know if there was any sort of roughly sequential allocation (even in blocks) of the numbers. Would the high numbers (barring the 400,000 plus TF re-numbers), like 250000, be allocated to soldiers later in the war than say 175000?

Steve.

As far as that particular number is concerned ity appears to be the only RE Number of that configuration,either with or without prefix,however the Number does occur twice more in the MiCs with a ASC Man{with M2 Prefix} & a LC Man,just as a number,as would be expected.I suspect that certain WR/ Numbers are replicated within the RE in other Companies,without prefix[or different Prefix]

You should be able to search the MiCs for WR numbers,which will give you a number range{@ least of those who served O/S & received Medals}
