From the statement below would it be right to assume that all those buried in this cemetery were POWs

Cemetery: CONDE-SUR-L'ESCAUT COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Country: France

Locality: Nord

Historical Information: Conde-sur-l'Escaut Communal Cemetery contains the graves of 90 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War, all of whom died in German hands between June 1917 and October 1918. The cemetery also contains three French war graves.

No. of Identified Casualties: 102

Your Thoughts appreciated

Conde was well behind the lines through the War - some 25 miles east of Cambrai & the Hindenburg Line - so that makes sense. Somebody will have details of where and why prisoners were there; presumably secure enough and easy to get to from the W Front.

Glyn,

There is no more hospital at Condé sur l'Escaut, it was at le Château de l'Hermitage, a castel near the Belgian frontier, or in a barracks called Caserne Rombault ,who does not exist any more, in center town, but nobody can tell me wich one precisely.

Information from the Maison du Tourisme of the town.

Regards

Pierre
