Soldiers in uniform were not allowed to carry umbrellas.

Soldiers not in uniform were not required to salute.

A teacher/cadet force officer when I was at school had lost the full use of his right arm and used to salute with the left. I don't know if he was given official dispensation.

The Household Cavalry Blues and Royal are allowed to salute when not wearing headress (due to an incident at the Battle of Warburg in which the Marquess of Granby lost his hat and wig).

I have always rather disliked the American system of saluting without a hat on. Personal prejudice, I suppose.

Probably, but you're far from alone.

Stamford School Cadets routinely appear in uniforms sans headdress.

Address of the RSM? :w00t:

Given all the rule, regulations etc there is the spirit of the matter. Seeing a officer simply brace up at a salute then say "why should I spring up and salute?"

Can't find the thread or if I posted it? What did the "manual" say on rifle drill? Shoulder arms and present! And all that
