Has anyone compiled a list of 1st Gordon Highlanders who surrendered Aug 27, 1914, southwest of Berty? Supposedly there were about 500 Gordons who were taken prisoner. I am trying to establish if James Mowat of the 1st Gordons was taken as a prisoner at this time.

Thank you,

The 'surrender' of the GH at Berty is a fascinating incident in WW1 and was the subject of an extended thread in this Forum some months ago. Briefly put, there is some controversy as to whether they 'surrendered' or willingly gave themselves up. The controversy reverberated through the post-war years and resulted in a libel trial in Edinburgh and fisticuffs in the Officers' Messes of the better class of Scottish Regmients.

James Mowat has been identified by the staff of the Gordon Highlanders Museum:

>>Dear John

We can confirm that 9801 Private James Mowat was casptured in August 1914

while serving with the 1st Battalion and the record shows that he was

located at Friedrichsfeld in Berlin. There is strong evidence from earlier

research that many seriously wounded were treated at a military hospital

there, then later thansferred to another POW camp. On the point of a list

of those captured, we do have the complete master of the 500 (approx) taken.<<<

Thank you, Malcolm, for the suggestion to contact the Museum!
