Hi,

I wonder if anyone can assist with the location of the 1st Royal Irish Regiment on 23 April 1915 when 9506 Pte Willie Roberts was killed in action.

Ian.

82nd Bde, 27th Division, involved in the Second Ypres battles - in particular Gravenstafel Ridge (22/23 April) and St Julien (24.4/4.5). Nothing more I can add, I'm afraid.

Steven,

Thanks for that.

I have just returned from Ieper [Ypres] where his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.

Will pursue this further on my next visit.

Ian.

Hello Ian,

I had a look through Orange, Green and Khaki, but it doesn't cover the actions the battalion were involved in that day; the following day is covered

I do have the entry in Ireland's Memorial Records:

Roberts, Willie. Reg. no. 9506. Rank, Private, Royal Irish Regiment, 1st Battalion; Killed in Action, France, April 23, 1915. Born Leeds, Yorkshire.

Send me a PM with your email address if you want a copy.

Regards,

Liam.

Agreed Liam - I could only find the references to the shells killing the fish which the Royal Irish eagerly scooped for the pan!
