Guest Charlton Posted 16 June , 2005 Share Posted 16 June , 2005 Hello, I have recently obtained my grandfather's medal card, most of which is straightforward. But in the area "Theatre of War first served in" it has what appears to be "(I)" or it could be "III" The date is 3-8-15. Most of the other cards that I have come across either say "France" or have been left blank which apparently indicates the same thing. Any info would be greatly appreciated, Charlton
Doug Lewis Posted 16 June , 2005 Share Posted 16 June , 2005 Charlton I suggest it is 1, which is the key for Western Europe Regards Doug.
Guest Charlton Posted 17 June , 2005 Share Posted 17 June , 2005 Thanks for this. He was a gunner in the RFA, and there is a later indication that he was involved in "29 DAC" before May 1916 when ammunition columns were reorganised. This was certainly in France. My guess was that he was in Gallipoli or Egypt at some time before that, the 29th Division of course famously involved. One question occurs to me. Do you know of any way to track the movements this column once it returns to France, presumably after January 1916, other than trekking down to Kew? Many thanks again, Charlton
