G'day All

I am after some info on 7th Kite Baloon Sect RFC, as my G / Uncle served with that unit in 1916.

Are there any books on that unit or a general book on Kite Sections.

His QSA + 5 bars Royal Scots, Brit War Medal & Victory RFC were given to me & I have his service papers for both Boer War & WWI but RFC / RAF papers are a bit Sparce.

Can anyone help, any info will be greatly appreciated as this is out of my collecting sphere and have no books on the subject.

The only mention of No 7 KBS in Volume 2 of The War in the Air, which covers 1916, is its listing in an Appendix as being in No 4 K B Squadron (along with No 5 KBS). No 4 K B Squadron was commanded by Maj F H Cleaver, and was based at Barly as part of the 12th (Corps) Wing, in III Brigade, RFC.

There aren't many publications around on the use of kite balloons during the War, however, there is Alan Morris's 1970 book The Balloonatics [it seems to be pre-ISBNs, but there is the number 09 100940 5, which might help to locate a copy]. In addition, balloons are mentioned quite a lot in Peter Liddle's The Airman's War [iSBN 0 7137 1592 8] and Peter Cooksley's The RFC/RNAS Handbook [iSBN 0 7509 2169 2].

I hope this helps you.
