rflory Posted 14 June , 2005 Share Posted 14 June , 2005 Most British divisions in the Great War has three types of Trench Mortar Batteries: 1. A light trench mortar battery, manned by infantry men, was attached to each infantry brigade in a division. These were numbered, (i.e. 1st TM Bty, 2nd TM Bty, etc. 2. From 1916 to early 1917 each division had three Medium TM Batteries manned by RFA gunners. These were numbered X, W, and Z followed by the division number (l.e. X.1, Y.1, Z.1). In 1917 the Z Battery was broken up and the number of Medium TM Batteries reduced to two. 3. From 1916 to 1917 each division had a Heavy TM Battery manned by RFA gunners. This was numbered V followed by the division number (i.e. V.1). The Heavy TM Batteries were broken up in 1917 and the men were distributed between the two remaining Medium TM Batteries. Regards.
