ebo Posted 6 July , 2003 Share Posted 6 July , 2003 I've had this tin (see picture) for years now but have only recently wondered about it's history. I'd always assumed that they were a Christmas gift of some sort to troops possibly on the front lines. Does anyone else own one? Who was the gift from? What was inside the tin? Who received them? How many were given? Looking back now I can't believe that when I was a smoker I just used to leave the tin on a pub table while I went off to play table football!! ebo
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 6 July , 2003 Share Posted 6 July , 2003 what you have here is a Princes Mary Gift tin from Christmas 1914. The tin when full had a variety of contents depending on whether you smoked, were a ritish or Indian soldier. But for a British soldier who was a smoker the tin contained 20 gaspers, one half ounce of tobacco, a card in an envelope, a picture of Princess Mary, a pipe and silver ended bullet pencil.
