Some Expert Advice Please

Hi There

I'm researching 2 of my relatives at the moment and wondered if you could help? Apologies if this has gone before, but I'm sure you won't mind. :)

What does this signify of my Great Grandfather's card?

E/2/102 B3

E/2/2 B5

And on another relatives card

RE/10/B210

RE/12 CHB

This is listed under the medal roll part of the card. I can sort guess that the E stands for East Kent Regt and the RE stands for Royal Engineers as I know they served in them respectively.

Finally you mention Medal Roll, what is this and where do I go to find them?

Many thanks

Steve Smith

Steve,

These signify the medal rolls to look at for the relevant gentlemen. The line Regiments were grouped in geographical regions around the record offices and given an individual code following the record office letter code.

The examples you have shown indicate

E/2/102 B3. E indicates the Hounslow record office and 2/103 B means the Royal West Kent Regiment. The East Kents were E/2/101 B.

The RE had its own record office.

These can be cross checked with a book at Kew which will give you the WO329 series medal roll to order there.

The Hounslow record office (E) was responsible for the Queens Regiment, Middlesex Regiment, East Surrey Regiment, Royal Sussex Regiment, East Kent Regiment, Royal West Kent Regiment and the Cyclist Corps.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Andy
