11th September 1916 on the Somme

Hi,

Does anyone know anything of this attack on the Somme on 11th September 1916? The battalion concerned is the 4th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) I think.

‘In the early morning of 11 September 1916 his battalion made a forlorn attempt to surprise, without artillery preparation, a German position, Hop Alley and Ale Alley, on the edge of Delville Wood, between the wood and Ginchy. Spearing was in command of a company and was last seen well ahead of his men. He was posted missing, but a few days later a working party reported that he had been killed.’

Does anyone know what happened?

Many thanks,

Hugh.

Somme day by day account gives 10th September 164 Brigade was unable to secure Hop Alley and Ale Alley....A frontal attack from Pilsen Lane resulted in some troops entering Hop Alley but they were shelled and machine gunned out of it.

Aye
