Steve, thanks for posting this lovely headstone, Steve Douglas of the Maple Leaf Project may already have this, but you may wish to contact him to see if this is the case, if not he may like to have a copy of this.

Here is his biography published in "The War Book of Upper Canada College - 1923", courtesy of the Archive Book CD Project, link.

DAVIS, IRWIN; B.; E. September '05, from The Collegiate Sch., Victoria, B.C.; aged 10-7; L. April '12; son of E. P. Davis ('76-'78), K.C., Vancouver; late student-at-law with Messrs. Davis, Marshall, Macneill, & Pugh, Vancouver. Enlisted June, 1916; Lt., 121st Bn.; O.S., August, 1916; France, September, 1916; transf'd R.C.R.; wounded, November, 1916; died of wounds, December, 1916.

According to the Royal Canadian Regiment War Diary entry for November 1, 1916, he was wounded while taking part in a patrol of Frenchman's Sap. Ten others were killed and two wounded. It appears the casualties were the result of friendly fire.

John. Perhaps he was in a local hospital. From the little bits of info about him being wounded perhaps the local connection is there, or the RAF connection. Regards Steve.

I know that FAirlop Airfield started as a WW1 aerodrome.. would that be the link.. I know of no other open that early.. such as Hornchurch
