DCLI Posted 15 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2005 Thanks one and all for your input. Having serached the various places suggested I have found that prices range from £30 to £54, plus postage. I think I will have to wait for a cheaper one to pop up. DCLI Posted 15 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2005 Very kind of you. I started collecting VMs before I realised how expensive some were. I have 11 out of a possible 14. But I am unsure about the genuiness of my latest acquisition, a Siam/Thai medal. The seller said he had had it checked by two dealers and offered money back if it was not genuine. I sent a photo to a man who is a bit of an expert and he said it looked OK. But being the suspicious one that I am, I am jsut not sure. I also have a Cuban medal I am unsure of. Neil Burns Posted 15 June , 2005 Share Posted 15 June , 2005 It appears the ear is exposed (which is a good sign) I will check the Laslo book when I get home. Take care, Neil

Neil Burns Posted 16 June , 2005 Share Posted 16 June , 2005 The key to the Cuba medal is whether is a hallmark (ac in a triangle) on the rim with the word bronze or if weakly impressed what appears to be 'RCNJ'. The repros have made in france and bronze on the ring. The Siam is a tough call based on your photo: What I like: the strange positioning of the fingers on the conch shell this eliminates one of two repro types. What I am unsure of: the rim seems pronounced and the details seem a little fuzzy, originals should have a sharp strike (laser sharp per Laslo). Without having it in hand it's tough for me to say. One point though, the facial features should be perfectly proportioned, the repro has a bit of a pained look. unfortunately that's all I can really provide.
