First World War Battalion war diaries

What is a Battalion war diary. War diaries, also known as Intelligence Summaries, are one of the most important sources for tracing the Army service of a particular individual during the First World War (WW1). From 1907 units of battalion size or larger were required by Field Service Regulations to keep a daily record of operations, intelligence reports and other events, and these are now called '' war diaries'' The ones below are to the Manchester Regt Battalions. The great value of a war diary is the background information on the activities of the unit as a whole which it provides. The amount of detail recorded in each diary varies depending on the circumstances of the unit concerned and the enthusiasm of the officer compiling it. Diaries can record little more than daily losses, map references others will show awards of Medals won by Officer, NCOs and soldiers. To look for war diaries in the NA thay are in record class WO95 this will give you the piece numbers for the Battalion you are looking for.
