shark Posted 4 June , 2005 Posted 4 June , 2005 can anyone identify a plane which crashed somewhere close to grevillers and has the number 2540 ?
Dolphin Posted 5 June , 2005 Posted 5 June , 2005 This isn't as easy as you might think. Do you have an idea of the approximate date of the crash? That would make research a little easier. Assuming that the crashed machine was British, '2540' could be one of a number of aeroplanes: 2540 was a BE 2c with BE 2e wings built by Wolseley Motors; A2540 was a DH 2 built by Airco; B2540 was a Sopwith Camel built by Ruston, Proctor & Co (this machine was used in the UK, so it's not likely to be the one you're interested in); C2540 was an RE 8 built by Daimler; D2540 may not have been built (the numbers D2126-D2625 were allocated to Bristol F.2bs to be built by National Aircraft Factory No 3 at Aintree, but only the first 126 were completed); E2540 was a Bristol F.2b built by British & Colonial; the G prefix was reserved for captured German aircraft; F2540 and H2540 were Avro 504Ks built by the Sunbeam Motor Car Co and A V Roe Ltd, respectively (these were trainers, so neither of them is likely to be your machine); N2540 wasn't allotted. Hence, the aeroplane which might be the one you're searching for is one of the following: 2540, which could have crashed in the period up to about mid 1917; A2540, which could have crashed in the period from mid 1916 to early 1917; C2540, which could have crashed in the period lfrom late 1917 to the Armistice; and E2540, which could have crashed in 1918. I hope that this helps you. Gareth
