could anyone help me with any information regarding eight McCarthys all from Merthyr Tydfil who died in action. i know one was my great grandfather a "john McCarthy". i think the others were all related to me but i know nothing else about them or the circumstances of their deaths. are they commemorated anywhere, any information would be gratefully received. I believe he was in welsh regiment 8057. many thanks tony

Hi Tony, seen you've taken the plunge :D

As Max said, that seems to be the John your looking for.

A bit tentative this but here's another 2, could be related.

Guardsman James McCarthy, 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...?casualty=47767

and,

Private Joseph McCarthy, Army Service Corps

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...asualty=2759831

Although James is listed as being born and enlisting at Merthyr, no place of residence is given.

Joseph is also listed as being born and enlisting at Merthyr, but residence is given as Dowlais.

Source for the info Tony is the Soldiers Died in the Great War CD Rom.

Maybe time to quiz the family!

Hope that is some help.

Regards, Chris.

Tony,

Maybe you should have a look at the 1901 census online. You might be able to narrow down the Merthyr McCarthys with their names, so that you can cross check with the SDGW info. Hopefully you might get enough info on the free search section, so it would not necessarily cost you.
