Derek Robertson Posted 2 June , 2005 Share Posted 2 June , 2005 Jonathan Saunders was good enough to take a photograph of the Hawick plaque at Helles during a recent visit. The plaque was taken out to Gallipoli in 1926:

Derek Robertson Posted 2 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2005 It was said that out of the 700 men of the 1/4th KOSB who had charged the field on the l2th July, 1915, only 70 remained to answer to their names. Over 300 men were killed, missing or captured and a further 300 were wounded. Over 70 of these men had belonged to Hawick. My thanks to Jon for the photographs. Jonathan Saunders Posted 2 June , 2005 Share Posted 2 June , 2005 My thanks to Jon for the photographs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Derek, Any excuse and off I go. You would have enjoyed the Efes, nothing like the Passch but another experience. And in between I had the KWAK (I said KWAK) in Verdun but thats another story. I hope you get out there yourself sometime. Jon

Derek Robertson Posted 3 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 3 June , 2005 Marina, The book was "All These Fine Fellows - Hawick & District and the Great War". There was a chapter dedicated to the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli. One third of the Hawick men in that battalion never came back from Gallipoli. Every year, on the anniversary of the 12th July, wreaths are laid at 2 locations in the town in remembrance of those who fell.
michaeldr Posted 3 June , 2005 Share Posted 3 June , 2005 Quote from Derek: Every year, on the anniversary of the 12th July, wreaths are laid at 2 locations in the town in remembrance of those who fell. If you are in The Borders at that time then it is well worth attending and Wilton Lodge Park usually looks wonderful too Regards Michael D.R.
