Guest Paul Little Posted 1 June , 2005 Share Posted 1 June , 2005 I am trying to trace which unit / regiment / brigade my grandfather, Corporal Edward Alexander Sheerman, belonged to in the Machine Gun Corps. I have traced his Medal Card through the National Archives, which gives a regiment number of 36196 - but I'm not sure how to use this number to trace his unit. Any ideas please ? Paul Johnson Posted 1 June , 2005 Share Posted 1 June , 2005 Hi Paul, Welcome to the forum. Just a small tip. You typed in the incorrect Service Number. His number was actually 36169. The numbers listed next to your grandfathers medals are references to Medal Rolls. In the relevant Medal Roll you should be able to find out which unit he served in. This does mean you have to either visit the NA or get someone to do it for you. Hope this helps. PAUL JOHNSON

Jock Bruce Posted 2 June , 2005 Share Posted 2 June , 2005 Don't think the rolls are on line and do MGC rolls give units? Jock
salientguide Posted 3 June , 2005 Share Posted 3 June , 2005 Ah yes, is it just the MICs that are on line?. Havent checked recently but know thye are trying to increase internet access for many categories. If not as said a trip to the NA where there are helpful staff would be useful.
