kin47 Posted 30 May , 2005 Share Posted 30 May , 2005 Hello Can anyone supply any information on the mining of cruiser CHATHAM on 26 May 1916? All I know is that the damage removed CHATHAM from sailing for the Jutland battle. Thank you. don
Michael Lowrey Posted 30 May , 2005 Share Posted 30 May , 2005 Don, Conway's has a little more information: "damaged by mine off Norfolk coast , 26 May 1916 and towed stern-first to Chatham for repairs." This is a case where you'd need the exact location of the mine hit to determine when and by whom the mine was laid. At minimum, the small German UCI minelaying submarines operating out of the Flanders ports laid numerous small minefields off the Norfolk coast. Unfortunately, not even all the merchant ships damaged or sunk for which the locations are readily available have been attributed out. Best wishes, Michael
