Remembered Today:

Operations Dump

Just received some great news about my Grandfather( Perhaps I rephrase that ;) ). He was actually named as being injured by being shelled while forming an operations dump at the Butte, Polygon Wood.

What sort of dump would this be? Munitions or something similar?

Taken out of War Diary, 95th Field Coy, RE WO95/1645 October 1917

It would probably be a foward dump of engineering tools, equipment and supplies, and might even have included small arms ammo and bombs for the infantry. Given the protection the Butte afforded within Polygon Wood, I am not surprised that such a thing was placed here.

Thanks Paul,

That was the sort of dump I thoght it might be. Lucky it was'nt all munitions because the shelling that hit him also killed 2 and wounded 6 including him. Could have been a really big bang!
