lithgow Posted 28 May , 2005 Share Posted 28 May , 2005 Is it possible to determine which Battalion a soldier was in from his regimental number? In his medal card, my great grandfather George Pringle Lithgow is listed in the Middlesex Regiment as Private G/92640. I assume this is a Middlesex number due to the 'G' for home counties. He is also listed in the 7th ® Battalion The London Regiment on 12th June 1917 in his marriage certificate although no reg number is given. Ive been reading the history of 'the shiny seventh' and I understand 7th London became part of the Middlesex in July 1916. Later 140 men transferred from C company 1/7 London to 1/7 Middlesex in January 1918. There seems to have been a lot of movement of men between these two regiments. He was an Edinburgh man who was wounded (SWB E/2265/1) and lived into his 80's. He may also have been in the Lothian and Border Horse. If any Middlesex or London buffs can help it would be great. All the best Stephen Lithgow
