I'm hoping someone can check SDITGW and enlighten me about those "Killed in Action" from the 1/Royal Irish Fusiliers on 6/7/1915. Reportedly there were 9 killed on that day and about 32 wounded.

These are the men I've identified so far:

Albert Camp

Arthur Coulahan

Edward Dunne

William Graham

James Kelly

George Oates

William O'Hara.

I have the SDITGW details for these individuals.

Additional casualities look to have included:

Bartholomew Colrain DOW 7/7/15

Francis Mohan DOW 9/7/15

John Rooney DOW 15/7/15

Frederick Smith DOW 7/7/15

Patrick Collier DOW 10/7/15 (Listed as 2nd Bn)

Any help in adding to these lists or additional details will be greatfully received.

Thanks for looking at the posting.

Regards,

Matthew

Hi Matthew

SDGW lists one more KIA which is not on your list being

Private James O'Reilly 18968 KIA 6.7.15

Born Londonderry

Enlisted Uddington Lanarkshire

Formerly 11909 Hussars of the line

Your list of DOWs checks out, do you need their SDGW details as well?

Looks like you're still missing one of the 9.

Hope this helps

Thanks Hambo,

That's greatly appreciated.

I have all of their details except for Collier. He is probably listed as a 2nd Battalion man.

I wonder if you could look to see if there are any other 2nd Battalion men who were killed on the pertinent date? Maybe the missing man is there?

Incidentally, are their any others listed as dying of wounds in the week following this event or have I identified the lot?

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello Matthew,

I think I may have found your missing man in Ireland's Memorial Records;

Stanley, Henry James. Reg. no. 18970. Rank Private, 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, Killed in Action, France, July 15th, 1915. Born Saltcoats, Lanarkshire.

If you want a copy of his entry send me a PM with your email address.

Regards,

Liam.

Details as follows;-

Collier, Patrick Sergeant 7937 DOW 10.7.15

Born Dublin

Enlisted Dublin

Residence, Naul, Co Dublin

Only other man who may fit the bill is Private Thomas Cantwell who was KIA on the 6th of July listed as 2nd Battalion also he's the only casualty with that date of death. There a couple of other KIAs in the week after but Collier is the only DOW

Hope Cantwell's the missing man

Liam and Hambo,

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I've done a bit more research on CWGC and with the Battalion history.

It looks like Thomas Cantwell is a fair bet for the missing KIA as he is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery in line with Kelly, Dunne and Camp. O'Reilly, O'Hara, and Graham are also buried in close proximity to them.

As for Stanley, it appears that he was one of the unfortunate victims of a prematurely exploding grenade during bombing practice on the 15th. Rooney was another casualty of this event. The other two fatalities appear to be 11044 Pte. Patrick Behan and 10901 Pte. James McKenna both listed as 2nd Bn men. All 4 were buried in Houtkerque Cemetery ( There are only 7 WW1 graves there in total)

It appears that many of the casualties on these two dates were either new recruits, Albert Camp only entered France on 28th June, or previously wounded 2nd Bn men who had joined the 1st Bn, such as Collier.

Would it be possible to get the SDITGW details for Cantwell, McKenna and Behan to complete the picture on these two dates as they don't appear in the battalion history? I'm interested to see whether McKenna and Behan are also listed as KIA even though they were well behind the lines.

Regards,

Matthew
