7:29am Posted 24 May , 2005 Share Posted 24 May , 2005 I have always wondered what is the best estimate of the number of casualties for opening of the Somme on the 1st July 1916, i would love to also know what is the best estimate of troops that actually contributed on that day. I bet this is a really easy one for you guys!!
Pte1643 Posted 24 May , 2005 Share Posted 24 May , 2005 Jim. Did you mean the Casualty figure for the whole of the first day? If so, the estimate is around the 58,000 mark, with approx' one third of this figure killed. Give or Take... I'm sure someone probably has a more accurate answer. Mark. 7:29am Posted 25 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Ok so we have 58k wounded. So if we know know many troops were involved in the attack.. I seem to remember that over a 1m soldiers were massed in the area, but how many of these were used in the initial attack?
