Boreenatra Posted 22 May , 2005 Share Posted 22 May , 2005 Can anyone explain the term "time expired" Pte Ernest Tucker 1/4 Essex Regiment 7/4/1885-7/2/1919. Dardanelles and France. Wounded in left arm Aug 21st 1915. Returned to England Sept. 1st 1915. Was time expired April 1916. Joined the Flying Corps. July 11th 1916, and served in France from Oct 20th 1917 to Feb 8th 1919. jim_davies Posted 22 May , 2005 Share Posted 22 May , 2005 Steve, It meant that his original term of service with the Territorials had finished. Pre-war Territorials (I think) only had to service their initial terms and one additional year of service. At that point they could opt for continued service or leave the army as time expired. It would seem that most did the former, and those leaving as time expired could certainly be conscripted later on. Jim
Jock Bruce Posted 22 May , 2005 Share Posted 22 May , 2005 Steve, it meant, that as a man serving in the TF, he had come to the end of period of engagement i.e. he was free to leave the Army. If he opted to re-enlist he was given a months leave and a gratuity. The right for TF men to be discharged at the termination of engagement (TOE) was done away with in May 16. Since the engagements of all serving TF were automatically extended by a year at the outbreak of war, you only see this happen in the period Aug 15 - Apr 16. Those men who had previously left at TOE were, after May 16, automatically re-enlisted, not neccessarily into the unit they had previously served with. Clear as mud??
