Gunner R.A. Posted 21 May , 2005 Share Posted 21 May , 2005 Hello all, it has been a while since i posted to the forum, i hope to be back researching in the near future, in the meantime i have offered to try and help a friend with his grandfathers records etc, he died from natural causes in 1970. Basicaly all he has is a Victory medal with the following details, TR/1527 PTE F W Thornton North'd Fus. I had a look on-line at the MIC archive and came up with the following, Fred Thornton, PTE, Northumberland Fusiliers, TR/5/1527. Northumberland Fusiliers, 36968. Can anyone shed any further light on this man?, can we deduce anything further from the two service numbers? Any help would be gratefully appreciated, Peter. Terry_Reeves Posted 21 May , 2005 Share Posted 21 May , 2005 Peter TR/5 indicates that he served intially in 53rd (Young Soldiers) Battalion which was formed on 27 October 1917 at Rugely, Cannock Chase, as part of the Ist Reserve Brigade. This moved to Clipstone circa Oct 1918 .He would have then been transferred to a Graduated Battalion for further specialised training before being sent to an active service unit of the Northumberland Fusiliers and renumbered.
