John_Hartley Posted 20 May , 2005 Share Posted 20 May , 2005 I've no wish to get into the politics of the Middle East, but am curious to know why CWGC would describe this Cemetery is being in Israel, when it is generally accepted by the international community (and under international law) that it isn't. Part of the location info on the CWGC website records " From Israel, stop at the Erez Crossing Point and enter the VIP cabin for a pass to enter Gaza. Walk through "no man's land" to the taxis on the other side." John
Greenwoodman Posted 20 May , 2005 Share Posted 20 May , 2005 I'm pretty sure its administered by the Jerusalem office, John, which may influence how the directions have been presented. Plus its de facto controlled by Israel (again not entering the politics of the area) despite what the international community would like.
Terry Denham Posted 20 May , 2005 Share Posted 20 May , 2005 CWGC takes its location nomenclature from UK Foreign Office advice and the host governments of the territories containing the cemetery locations and therefore, presumably, this is as advised by them. There is no other internationally recognised country in which it could be placed. No doubt that will change in due course.
John_Hartley Posted 20 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 May , 2005 Richard/Terry Ta. And, phew, we managed a current Middle East matter without any need for moderators to moderate. John
