war cemetaries

when did they start to concentrate graves into a centralised cemetary, i have a reference from a war diary of one labour coy,stating,aug 1917,122th labour coy at aix noulette,moved 2,500 bodies to official cemetaries,[this coy was formerly the 14th west surrey labour coy,grave registration]part of 23rd group.

I don't know about during the war, but my understanding is that IWCG policy after the war was to build many small battlefield cemeteries and the first ones were so laid out. Amongst them was the very small one at the side of the road between Contalmaison and Fricourt (? Wood, I think.) Then the accountants did their sums and decided that biggest was sometimes going to be best.
