My wife has just passed on information to suggest that Smiler may have left us on Monday.

It now seems this is indeed a sad fact and I will try to attend his funeral.

Yes, I heard this too but nothing on any news searches so far. A sad event - so very few of these gentlemen remain now.

We should also all spare a thought for Graham who has been Smiler's carer for a number of years - and a damn good job he did of it too !

I will certainly try to attend the funeral which will either be in Ashtead or Leatherhead depending on whether Smiler has chosen to be buried.

As has been said , another of this great band of brothers has gone on to join those who went before and has now passed out of our sight.

God bless Smiler.

Almost the last of a special generation. The thin threads connecting us to those who took part in the events that interest us so much are now nearly gone. God rest his soul.

It had too happen sooner or later and although I never met or even saw Smiler I feel strangely moved by his passing.

Hello All

Very saddened to have heard of "Smiler's" passing, especially as he was the last of the Essex Yeomanry volunteers from that time. I felt a connection with him as I had served (very briefly) in the Essex Yeomanry myself, & also had read, watched & listened to his interviews over the years.

RIP Smiler, you have answered the last roll call, & "Passed on to Higher Service", to join those frinds & comrades from all those years ago.

Will be raising a glass (or 2) tonight............

Go Well

Mark
