Labour Corps

Wonder if any of the Labour Corps people out here can shed any light on this unit in the Labour Corps.

Today at Kew on one of the medal rolls i found this gentleman had served in the 831 A.E. Co Labour corps attached to the 130 P.O.W. Coy, and then went back to the 831 A.E. Co.

Any help or guidance gratefully received.

831 A E Coy is not mentioned in the Order of Battle for 11 Nov 1918 in France.

A number of Area Employment Companies became part of 43 Royal Fusiliers in September 1918.

This battalion had 46 companies and they formed Garrison Guard Companies.

For example 906 A E Coy became 41 Coy, 43 RF.

44 Royal Fusiliers had 12 companies which were anti aircraft companies. These may also have formed from Labour Area Employment companies.

I have some war diaries from 43 RF and I'll see if 831 Coy is mentioned.

Thanks Paul and Sean,

Thank you for the extra information. Was aware of the POW Company as I have another group from an Officer who was wounded in 1917 and spent the rest of the war with a POW Company although very little information survives concerning them.

The Area Employment Companies in new to me. Sean the Royal Fusiliers and the A.E. Coys might have something there as on this gentlemans MIC it lists him as his last regiment as # GS/106932 in the Royal Fusiliers.

My Gt Grandfather was GS/108542 on the MIC when he was in 43 Royal Fusiliers.

Also on the MIC and previous to above he was 583150 Labour Corps.

His Medal Roll told me that he was 989 AE Coy, Labour Corps and then 43 RF.

It looks like your gentleman could have been in 43 or 44 RF.

What was his name and I'll see if he's mentioned in the war diary pages I have, as they mention a lot of other ranks names.

Sorry Andy, no mention of your soldier or 831 AE coy.

There is a Pte Rowlands mentioned but there are a few of those in the Royal Fusiliers.

Sean,

Just got an e mail from Ivor re this gentleman, 831 were a garrison guard company. It seems that he was one of the A.E. Men transferred to the 43rd RF although Ivor cannot be certain.

Thanks again for you assistance.

Sean,

Just got confirmation that T.R Rowland was indeed in the 43rd Royal Fusiliers.
