Dear All,

could someone advise which batallions if any, of the West Yorkshire Regt, were committed to the Dardanelles campaign? Many thanks.

Kerry

8th servicebatalion(west riding regiment) part of the 11th northern division landed at suvla 6th aug 1915

Sorry JohnHenry

But Westlake’s “British Regiments at Gallipoli” confirms Lee’s previous info

re 9th Batt - not 8th

See page 37:

9th (Service) Battalion The Prince of Wale’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)

Landed at ‘C’ beach at 10pm on 6th August 1915

I take your point Charles

but the orig question was about the West Yorkshires

and not the West Riding

Since there seems to be room for confusion then perhaps Kerry can confirm which regt is of interest here

JHB

You can start with the book which I referred to previously

‘British Regiments at Gallipoli’ by Ray Westlake

Published by Leo Cooper in 1996

ISBN 0 85052 511 X

Has just over a page and a half on the 8th (Service) Battalion The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) in which Ray, quoting from their War Dairy,

gives an outline of their service at Gallipoli.

Michael D.R.
