MelPack Posted 1 July , 2003 Share Posted 1 July , 2003 Could anyone tell mewhich cavalry/yeomanry units were deployed with the British divisions sent to Italy in 1917-18? The only mounted regiment that I can identify is the Northamptonshire Yeomanry which was attached as a GHQ unit. Did this mean that they were never engaged on the front? Thanks Mel
paul guthrie Posted 1 July , 2003 Share Posted 1 July , 2003 Not off the top of my head but in the Battleground Europe series Francis McKay has books on Asiago and Touring the Italian front. Also husband and wife named Wills I think have British Army In Italy 1917 1918, all in print.
Guest Hill 60 Posted 1 July , 2003 Share Posted 1 July , 2003 Mel - Have you looked in the The Long, Long Trail? Click on 'Tommies' and then choose Cavalry and/or Yeomanry and you'll get an idea of which units were in Italy.
Guest Hill 60 Posted 1 July , 2003 Share Posted 1 July , 2003 I've had a look through British Regiments 1914 - 1918 and, apart from the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, I found the following units that served: King Edward's Horse. Hampshire Yeomanry.
paul guthrie Posted 1 July , 2003 Share Posted 1 July , 2003 On second thought the book is by Wilks instead of Wills I think.
Kate Wills Posted 2 July , 2003 Share Posted 2 July , 2003 The book Paul mentions is The British Army in Italy 1917-1918 by John & Eileen Wilks. The Northamptonshire Yeomanry saw plenty of action in Italy and lost men, but without my books to hand I cannot elaborate at the moment. The Northamptonshire WFA chairman David Parish's grandfather fought with them, and I can put you in touch if you wish. Trooper E. Parish is included in a well-known photo of the NY crossing a river valley during the Italian campiagn.
