Remembered Today:

Master/Skipper.

Would be grateful for an explanation as to why you see the two terms used in regard to WW1 merchant navy.

Is it something to do with the size of the vessel?

Bob.

Bob,

Size matters!

Dependant on what qualification they had.

Skipper

Certificate of competancy. Fishing boats

Master

Certificate of competancy. Foreign trade

Home trade

colonial

and on the register of Master Mariners

Master Mariners could well be given command of a trawler but not the other way round?. Albeit many trawler skippers were Master mariners.
