Chris_Baker Posted 13 May , 2005 Share Posted 13 May , 2005 From diary of 256 Tunnelling Company RE “15 August 1916. Completed the taking over of IV Sector from No. 181 (T) Company RE. 2nd Lt S. L. Faithfull RE, No. 158153 L/C Hinton H. G. and No. 158117 L/C. West A.G. died of gas poisoning”. Company HQ was at Agnez les Duisans. The three casualties are all buried at Maroeuil. Can anyone tell me where IV Sector was? I am guessing it was south of Neuville Saint Vaast?
Simon Jones Posted 20 May , 2005 Share Posted 20 May , 2005 I think you are right in thinking south of Neuville St Vaast and closer to Arras than Vimy Ridge. The sectors were lettered rather than numbered, i.e. G, H & I. Does the War Diary have any other details, i.e. map references? Also there may be a weekly mine report or blow report for the incident which caused the gassing. Regards Simon
Simon Jones Posted 21 May , 2005 Share Posted 21 May , 2005 One other thought is that Vimy was IV Corps sector and the Tunnellers were corps troops, perhaps the diary means that they were moving in IV Corps sector? Regards Simon
Chris_Baker Posted 21 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 21 May , 2005 My latest thought is that it is not IV but N, although the hand writing is closer to the former... and of course N Sector was east of Neuville St Vaast ...
