Edwin,

B Battery was simply the designation of a unit of men and guns. There is a section in the Long Long Trail, a link at the top of this forum where the formation of artillery Brigades and Batteries are described fully. That should prove helpful to you. When men left the line and went into rest, depending on the relief sometimes they left their guns for the relieving force to man. And sometimes they took their guns with them. Generally if it was just a rest, they probably left the guns there. if they were in transfer and were to move to another part of the line, then they took thier guns with them. hope that makes sense.

cheers Aaron.
