ian turner Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 (This is my first posting!) I recently discovered a WW1 casualty family member. He was in the Highland Light Infantry and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. Date of death 28/6/15, killed in action. His batalion is shown respectively on CWGC/SDGW/Medal Roll index as 8th Bn. That was a UK only unit, and the HLI battalions at Gallipoli were 1/5, 1/6 and 1/7, all in the 157th Bgde, 52nd Div. No doubt he had been transferred when going overseas. However the 52nd Div landed end June/early July (medal card shows date of entry 2 July, four days after his death!). The 52nd Div lent a brigade to the 29th Div for the attack at Gulley Ravine, but that was 156th Bgde, which contained no HLI battalions. My question to the members is thus - does any know about the loan of soldiers from HLI to the 29th Div, and with transfer to a brigade containing other regiments? SDGW and medal roll both show KIA, so I presume he was a casualty of Gulley Ravine. Any light shed on above welcome. Ian Turner
dycer Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 Ian, I can't directly assist with your enquiry re Gallipoli but I can tell you that members of the 8th H.L.I. were attached to the 8th Royal Scots to bring it up to War strength before it went to France in November 1914.7709 Corporal W. Angus V.C. was awarded his V.C. for his bravery on 12 June 1915 as a member of the 8th H.L.I. attached to the 8th Royal Scots. At the time the 8th Royal Scots( with drafts from the 8th HLI) formed part of the 7th Division and subsequently moved to the 51st Highland Division.Lt J Martin 8th H.L.I. was awarded the Military Cross on 14 January 1916 whilst attached to the 8th Royal Scots. It would appear that members of the 8th H.L.I. were used as drafts for other Battalions and Regiments but possibly the Regimental Museum may be able to assist with your enquiry if another Pal cannot answer it. Malcolm Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 He could also have been with 1st KOSB. What was his name? Aye Malcolm
Malcolm Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 further to above, B company, 8th HLI was attached to 7th Royal Scots following the Gretna disaster. 156 Brigade at Gully Ravine had 4th & 7th Royal Scots and 8th Cameronians. I can post the relevant section of the Royal Scots history if required. Aye Malcolm
ian turner Posted 12 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 12 May , 2005 Malcolm, He was 7689 Lance Corporal Andrew Wands. Yes, please, would appreciate further history. George - thanks yr reply. Ian
Malcolm Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 Surname WANDS Firstname Andrew Service number 7689 Date of death 28/06/1915 Decoration Place of birth Wishaw Other 8th Bn. (T.). SNWM roll THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY Rank L/Cpl Theatre of death Gallipoli. looks like one of B Company. go to www.snwm.org click on ' search the First World War ' enter 28/06/1915 in the date field and nothing else. 973 men died on that date - locate Highland Light Infantry and most will be 1st KOSB formerley HLI in 29th Division but the rest of the 8th HLI are there. I'm not sure how many died but the narrative gives 80 men still standing in 4th RS after the battle so expect similar. I'll post the rest of the info later. Malcolm Posted 13 May , 2005 Share Posted 13 May , 2005 Ian, There is such a lot of detail about 156 Brigade attack in the Royal Scots 1914-1919 that it may be worth getting hold of a copy. It is available in reprint from the Naval and Military Press - code 7451. http://www.naval-military-press.com pp145 to 170 incl.
